Coloring your hair can be transformative, and with the right kind of color and highlights, you could look like the best possible version of yourself.

But no reward comes without some risks.

Your hairstylist had been through your hair journeys with you from a 4×4 lace closure to the bob experiment and recommended that you give your hair as much TLC as you can.

Here’s what the stylist recommends you to keep your hair color in all its glow and sheen.

1. Avoid washing your hair too soon after a new color job.

It is advisable to wait at least 48 hours before giving yourself a hair wash.

The time you wait is directly proportional to the amount of time the color pigment will have to soak into your hair cuticles.

Stylists suggest avoiding drug store shampoos altogether as their cleansing agents can make the color fade faster.

2. Do not Skip the conditioner.

There are days when washing your hair may seem like a chore, and conditioning after all that rinse and lather is abysmal.

So, many of you tend to skip it.

Conditioning might seem to be a time-consuming task, but these additional 10 minutes in the shower will go a long way in keeping your coloured hair shinier.

3. Refrain from taking those long and hot showers

What is more relaxing than a hot shower after a long tiring day?

It calms your nerves and feels comforting.

But this comfort comes at a price which is damage to your coloured hair.

When you wash your hair with hot water, it strips the natural oils and makes your hair strands brittle.

Coloured hair needs more moisture to keep its sheen.

So use lukewarm water for shampoo and cold water for the final rinse postconditioning.

4. Experimenting too much, too soon.

You can schedule an appointment for a chemical treatment like straightening after 72 hours of hair color.

But experts advise you to keep a minimum 15-day gap before doing anything to your freshly coloured hair.

Chemical treatments not only damage the color but also damages your hair texture and quality.

5. Using heating tools without applying hair protectants

If you are someone who uses heating tools like straightening iron, curling wand, or a blowdryer, keep in mind that these products can cause dullness in the long run as using these tools makes the hair cuticles rough.

Using high heat on your hair without protectants can dry out your strands and break down the color in your hair.

USe these tools on the lowest possible heat setting and cost your hair with a good quality heat protectant spray or serum to protect your hair color from fading.

6. Avoid using shampoos with sulfate.

Ordinary shampoos can cause a lot of dryness and moisture loss, making your hair look dull and frizzy.

A sulfate-free option is suggested because it is gentle and does not irritate or disturb your scalp and wash your color away.

A sulfate-free shampoo helps maintain your scalp’s pH levels and soothes it, which allows the hair to be soft and frizz-free.
